urlimg.com is an image processing and storage service with a URL-based API. It's intended use is on sites where modified versions of images need to be generated and updated. Suppose that you are creating a website which sells various items and need to generate thumbnails for each of them. Instead of having to buy, install and use a program like Photoshop, you can use urlimg.com to generate, update and host the thumbnails. In addition to making thumbnails, there are commands for doing other image transformations such as watermarking, cropping, resizing and rotating. These commands can also be combined together to do more complex image transformations.
urlimg.com is different from other image resizing and hosting sites by the fact that all of your images are created implicitly with specially crafted links. Let's say that you are working on a site called example.com and you need a 300x400 sized copy of an image located at http://example.com/image.jpg. <img src="http://urlimg.com/resize/300x400/example.com/image.jpg" /> Using urlimg.com to generate images has the advantages that:
urlimg.com is completely free to use up to the first 50 MB of processed images stored. That is, for each image that you process with urlimg.com, the size of the modified image is counted against your quota. Once your quota exceeds 50 MBs you must pay a flat, monthly fee of $0.05/MB. Quotas are calculated on a per-domain name basis. In order to have more than the default 50 MBs of storage, you must register for an account and attach a site to your account.
